Light comes from a window at the far end, enough to run by. Breath comes hard.

The Body Farm actually exists.

The author, Simon Beckett, has also been there. Just when you think something is all wrapped up he throws in a curve ball and everything changes. One particular twist made me audibly gasp in shock.

Simon Beckett really is that good. This book truly is gripping. I read most of the book in a day.

Whispers of the Dead is another great addition to the David Hunter series. I have read the books in order which I think is the best way , but I do think each book would also work as standalone novel. Oct 23, Anna rated it liked it Shelves: That's not to say it's a bad book or that I didn't enjoy it; it isn't and I did!

It was as gory, gruesome and morbidly fascinating as I expected it to be, but I felt it was missing the shocking intensity of the first two books. I guessed the killer early on, which although wasn't confirmed until the reveal, took some of the suspense out of it; I remember actually gasping at the reveals in the Rating: I guessed the killer early on, which although wasn't confirmed until the reveal, took some of the suspense out of it; I remember actually gasping at the reveals in the previous books.

I also didn't find the setting and atmosphere as creepily chilling as before. That said, although I was a little disappointed by this story in comparison to The Chemistry of Death and Written in Bone , it was still good and I look forward to The Calling of the Grave View all 5 comments.

Hat mich leider nicht gepackt. Telkens verrassend. Altijd goed doordacht.

May 23, Caitlin rated it really liked it Shelves: With Whispers of the Dead I just found one.

Plenty of forensic details, plenty of suspense, plenty of bodies. Highly recommended. View 1 comment.

Apr 19, J. Juzwik rated it it was amazing. Whispers of the Dead is a dark thriller, featuring Dr. David Hunter, a British forensic anthropologist. He leaves his native London for Tennessee with the purpose of conducting research at the legendary Body Farm, as well as to visit his mentor and director of the facility, Tom Leiberman. When Tom is called to assist with a homicide investigation, he wants David on his team.

The bodies begin to pile up, and trust me--the crime scenes are pictures you don't want in your head for too long. Danger l Whispers of the Dead is a dark thriller, featuring Dr. Danger lurks for members of the team, and needless to say, time is of the essence to find the individual responsible.

I know what you're thinking: Another serial killer story--yawn! But, guess what. You're as wrong as you can be. The deeper I got into this, and the more I got to know of the characters, the harder it was to put down. You'll know that as soon as you start getting the story from the killer's point of view, which Beckett shares with us.

The killer's thoughts and overall philosophy are creepy as hell, and believe me, you'll be turning those pages very quickly. This is an edgy mystery, extremely graphic, and the end packs a helluva wallop. And that's not all - snooping around to get some author info, I discovered that Whispers is the third in a series featuring Dr. Now, if you're like me, about the time you're halfway through the second book in most series 'featuring' a specific character, you're searching the fine print for the killer's phone number so you can arrange for him to quietly, and permanently, dispose of this so-called 'recurring star' long before Book 3 is even drafted.

There is nothing more tedious than reliving so-and-so's 'lonely' past, 'dismal' present, and 'bleak' future over and over and But, not so here. This is a solid three-dimensional character.

He's not some flat Jack's-a-dull-boy dud forced upon you on every other page. Haven't read these yet, but you can bet I'm pulling a hard reverse here to begin at the beginning with this doc. This is good stuff, people, and I recommend it highly.

I read this in a day. It was very hard to put down. Another brilliant novel in the David Hunter forensic anthropologist series.

This one was set in the US, at the Body Farm, the FBI's forensic outdoor lab--the place where they use real bodies to investigate all the things that happen to us when we die. Great stuff. This one was even gorier than the first two, a huge body count by the time David is finished, but it's superbly written and has an almost breathtaking climax. I know a lot more about I read this in a day.

I know a lot more about dead bodies and how to fake forensic evidence than I did going into this. I'm hoping one day to put that knowledge to good use. Oct 24, Teresa Grubbs rated it it was amazing Shelves: This author never fails to disappoint me with a thriller that I can't seem to put down.

The killer in this book likes to photograph his victims in the very last moments of death and has been killing vagrants for years without interruption, but he steps things up by leaving a body in a rental cabin in the Smoky Mountains where authorities will find it and begin investigating. Wonderful book and series! Ein Einblick in eine Bodyfarm. Jun 26, Charlotte Lisbon rated it really liked it.

Unfortunately I predicted the murderer early on in this book. It was still very disgusting and full of maggots as all good David Hunter books are. As this book made me stay up till 1 am in the hopes that I could finish it before I leave for vacation it deserve the 4 stars even though I am getting more and more annoyed with his never ending endings, which feel very long and overextended.

Bilo je osvjezavajuce. Nije bilo naporno usprkos dijela gdje glavni lik sumnja u sebe. A lot like the previous two, but this one takes place on a bigger island - well, not exactly an island, per se, but if things keep on the way they're going, the US may become a political island.

Lots of killing in this one, as expected from the first two. The killer seemed like he was so far ahead of his pursuers that it hard to imagine they'd ever catch him. But with a bit of luck, and David Hunter's analytical mind, they finally catch up with him, but there are a few surprises even at that late stage of the game, as you might expect if you've read the first two. The series seems to concentrate as much on the people as the crimes. Makes it a little slower than some people like, but I enjoy it. But now I need a break from this series. Too many people dying.
